Veggie Type: Spice, Root
Season: Harvested right before it gets cold and stored through the winter
Peak months: October-November
Uses: Turmeric is very similar to ginger in appearance, although its orange instead of tan, and it can be used similarly, although its taste is very different. Peel off the tough exterior of the root to reveal the meat inside, but be warned that the bright color of raw turmeric root is fully capable of staining hands and clothing. If you’re using it as a substitute for ginger powder, you’re going to need about three to four times more fresh ginger (grated finely). Try pickling it or grating fresh turmeric on top of eggs, tofu scramble, or salad.
